Cyber security threats and scam telephone calls

As many of you would be aware these two areas have increased exponentially in the last year or two. We have had numerous phone calls regarding scam emails or phone calls received by clients from parties purporting to be from the Tax Office. Two things to remember here:

• With emails – hover over the links and read the source, it will often show a “sharepoint” URL web link, usually indicating it is a scam or a virus threat
• With Emails, check the Senders Email address and the URL of the links, it should be the same.
i.e. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. LINK www.sharepoint.addefg.com/free/34ddd/d.xml SCAM
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. LINK www.telecom.com.au Most probably OK, if in doubt ring the company.
• With telephone calls – always ask for identification from the caller or get phone number and ring THEM back. Whilst you can receive legitimate calls from the ATO if you are unsure ask them to put their request in writing to you or ring them back on an official phone number.

The other cyber security threats are numerous however two of the more common threats are:
• An email from someone you know requesting you to transfer money to a nominated account. The cyber thieves are able to somehow filter common threads of emails you have sent previously and prey on familiar words between people that communicate by email regularly. Beware. If in doubt get a second opinion.
• Requests from an energy provider e.g. AGL or a Telco asking you to pay a bill. DO NOT click the links, see above, clicking on these links can quickly destroy your computer system.
